Cristina Canale and the Landscapes of the World
Even while her painting continuously explores new paths, evident beauty is a feature found throughout the entirety of Cristina Canale’s artistic career. A sensitive viewer, even one without the slightest knowledge of the craft, will be captivated by the material, transparency, opacity, colors, shapes, and, above all, lights that “ignite” her canvases, constantly enthralling the gaze. Other viewers, while not overlooking this charm, will playfully follow the multiple dialogues between painters and tendencies that her works unveil and evoke. Art history, everyday images, distancing, and visceral immersion — they are all present here.
Her work’s celebration of painting coupled with its sophisticated internal reasoning makes it irreducible to any textual intellectualism. The artist begins with her broad international repertoire and filters this through her freedom — so typical of the best Brazilian art — mixing trends that sometimes seem fundamentally irreconcilable, establishing unforeseen bridges and connections between diverse visual languages.
Two years ago, in an exhibition that brought together the perspectives of various artists on the Roberto Marinho Collection, Canale established a dialogue concerning the pictorial options taken by Di Cavalcanti when painting Ivette, a painting from 1963. She was interested not only in retracing the path of the modern artist’s brushes but, above all, in providing pictorial alternatives and paths that the painter could have taken at each supposed stage. This exercise, carried out by way of multiple drawings, resulted in a final silkscreen print and painting, while it also constituted an ingenious conversation by a woman painter who elevates the feminine from the mere condition of a model to assume a partnership role in the work.
This exhibition in 2024 at Casa Roberto Marinho presents Cristina Canale as a curator on the ground floor and Cristina Canale as a painter on the first upper floor. As we walk through the settings on the two floors, we will see how fluidly these two roles are intertwined in the landscapes of the world created by this Rio de Janeiro artist.
