The Inconstancy of Form presents new works by Beth Jobim alongside pieces from recent decades.
The thought-provoking title underscores how Beth Jobim maintains a personal artistic language in constant motion — one whose stability paradoxically comes from embracing and reconfiguring seemingly antagonistic elements in contemporary art.
Through his decision to organize the exhibition nonchronologically, curator Paulo Venancio challenges visitors to perceive the affinities, tensions, and contrasts across various moments in the artist’s journey. Beyond their intrinsic beauty, the drawings, paintings, objects, and spatial installations share in their creative freedom and ability to surprise us. Through her gestures and depictions of stones — one of the most fundamental recurring elements in Beth Jobim’s poetics — the artist gives rise to broad horizons.
Beth has developed a close relationship with the Roberto Marinho Collection: a striking work of hers enhances the facade of our collection storage facility. Furthermore, in 2021, for the exhibition “The Artist’s Choice,” she carefully curated a selection of Ione Saldanha’s Ripas [Slats], placing them in dialogue with her own works. This approach gave individual significance to pieces that had previously been appreciated primarily as part of the overall group.
In the present exhibition, the artist is drawing not only on works from our collection but also from her own, to trace a visual and affective biography, ranging over her trajectory, her influences, and her dialogs with her generational peers. Her house, that of art, is also ours and so forth…
