On July 29, 1925, our grandfather Irineu Marinho set in motion a journey that would transcend his own lifetime: the creation of O GLOBO. Fate gave him very little time to witness the beginning of what he had envisioned. Less than a month after launching the newspaper, he passed away at the age of 49, leaving behind a legacy still under construction.
It was up to our father, Roberto Marinho, first as a young apprentice and later as a visionary leader, to transform that newspaper into more than just a communication vehicle. Under his leadership, O GLOBO became one of the pillars of Brazilian history and the seed of a media group that would grow alongside the country: radio, publishing, television, internet, streaming.
Throughout this period, we also witnessed profound transformations in journalism. We saw the transition from linotype to offset printing; from typewriters to computers; from solitary editing of the printed newspaper to minute-by-minute updates on tablets and smartphones; from photographs developed in labs to instant digital images. In each of these transitions, O GLOBO managed to reinvent itself without ever losing its essence. Because we have always understood that technology is not an end in itself, but a tool in service of information.
The journalism we practice today is not the same as in 1925, nor could it be. The world has changed, Brazil has changed, readers have changed. But our core values remain: the relentless pursuit of truth, a commitment to plurality, and the courage to say what must be said.
This exhibition helps us reflect on that history.
