For its part, A criação do artista popular [The Creation of the Folk Artist] presents, for the first time, the collection of Lélia Coelho Frota.
An outstanding poet, essayist, art historian and anthropologist, in 1978, Lélia published the book Mitopoética de 9 artistas brasileiros [Mythical Poetics of 9 Brazilian Artists], which objectively revealed exceptional individual talents who previously, with rare exceptions, had been generically considered as artisans of regional folk art. She thereby personalized the folk creators in the vast field of Brazilian art, rather than freezing them as faceless, nearly anonymous characters of collective artistic expressions.
