Estúdio do artista na Lapa, 1985
Angelo Venosa is the most important Brazilian sculptor of his generation. His work creates a language running counter to the pictorial fever of his peers in the 1980s at Parque Lage, while it also subverts the logic of planes that are displaced to create empty spaces in the solid experience of Brazilian constructive art.
The artist was not solely interested in praising the organic or the ecological. His art the underlying structures and the tensions of these realms through forms that one might hastily associate with the “natural” world.
Venosa’s work maintains the freedom achieved by modern sculpture and embodies the planar thrusts of nongeometric abstraction. In this sense it stands as a bridge between these two main currents in the Roberto Marinho Collection.
This show, curated by Paulo Venancio Filho, opted for a fluid and nonchronological organization that underscores recurring elements in Venosa’s artistic path. It is the first overview of his work, and will certainly inspire many other exhibitions centered on this remarkable artist.
With Angelo Venosa: Escultor [Angelo Venosa: Sculptor], Casa Roberto Marinho reaffirms its aim to put modern art in dialogue with its unfoldings in the contemporary space.
