We are very pleased to be showing the series of metal engravings by Maria Martins that compose the album "Maria, 1946", originally shown at Valentine Gallery, New York, on the occasion of the exhibition "Maria: New Sculptures", in April 1946.
This group includes a study for L’Implacable (1944), one of the sculptor’s seminal works, now in the Roberto Marinho Collection. This show features the most recent addition to our collection, resulting from the generosity of the Heloisa and Carlos Luiz Martins Pereira e Souza couple, the latter of whom is a great-nephew of Ambassador Carlos Martins, the brilliant artist’s husband. Gestures like this, unfortunately still rare in Brazil, should be celebrated by the institution as well as by the public that is now able to enjoy seeing these works.
In 2022, Casa Roberto Marinho, in partnership with the Museu de Arte de São Paulo [MASP], will present a large retrospective of Maria Martins. The current show thus serves as a foretaste of the large event to be held next year. And, above all, it expresses our profound gratitude for this important donation.
